ALD is an inherited metabolic storage disorder. The disorder is caused by a faulty gene passed down on the X-chromosome. The faulty gene in ALD prevents the body from breaking down or metabolizing certain fatty acids. Fatty acids can build up in the brain, nervous system, and adrenal glands. Adrenal glands are found on the kidneys. The outcome of a person affected by ALD includes problems with movement, memory, speaking, verbal understanding, and other mental functions.
